Generation Y, those born between 1978 and 1990, is being hailed as the most narcissistic generation to date, a group of “uber-stroked kids” who, as adults, are demanding from their employers the same supervision and self-esteem building their parents gave them. A group of think tanks, lead by the Pew Charitable Trusts, found that for the first time, men in their 30s are earning less than their parents. For the first time ever, this generation will not be more well-off financially than their parents. What should we make of this new finding? Does this mean the American Dream is no longer attainable? They’ve got the tattoos, they’ve got the piercings, they’ve got the BlackBerry in one hand and the half-caf mocha latte in the other and an iPod plugged into their ears. Sure, they always look busy, but if you sneak up behind them in their cubicles — which isn’t hard, because that iPod is blaring Maroon 5 — you find they’re actually watching YouTube videos while instant-messaging with four of their tattooed, pierced pals.
